Many of Philip K. Dick 's stories were made into films, including "Blade Runner", which was based on the novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? "And" Total Recall "was based on the short story" We Can Remember It for You Wholesale. "Steven Spielberg's 2002 adaptation of "The Minority Report" starring Tom Cruise, was based on the short story written in 1956.
It was my experience that the book is usually better than if the film after seeing the movie, I decided to read the original story that unfolds in a future where mutant creatures with the help of a force capacity prescient pre-criminal police to arrest criminals for crimes they have committed in the future.
They are then sent into exile or detention camps. Murder has been virtually eliminated. Of course, criminals complain that they have done nothing but what is painted on the ground that they probably deserve. When Anderton, the first policeman, is accused of murder he thinks there has been an error or has been established. He begins to wonder if there is something wrong to punish people for things they have not yet done. If he can not discover who introduced it will fall victim to the system he helped create.
Some story elements were changed. For example, the three Pre-Cogs in the film are portrayed But peacefully in the story they were drugged and they are forced to use their psychic abilities. But Spielberg kept the theme basic history and makes a sci-fi adventure thrilling. This is a great film, the technical aspects are well done, special effects are non-permanent and the game is superb.
But I definitely recommend reading the original story for Dick vision that was ahead of its time and surprisingly up to date despite years of being over fifty years. The edition that I chose – the minority REPORT AND OTHER CLASSIC STORIES – contains stories eighteen in total. This is not a best of collection is actually the fourth volume of his collected short stories and covers the period between 1954 and 1964, but it is a good representation and a must for serious collectors.
His work is imaginative, surreal and often downright odd. Dick talks about people rather than technology and science. His characters seem like ordinary people, but strange things happen to them. The plots take complex twists and sometimes they look like episodes of the Twilight Zone.
His worlds are often dystopian future societies characterized by poverty, oppression and hopelessness, where people lead dehumanized life. Yet he often incorporates humor in his stories. Many of them involve precognition and themes of false reality. Others deal with the fine line between man and machine and ask – What is humanity?
This is a great edition for enthusiasts, collectors and lovers stories shorter than novels. If you do not know Philip K. Dick of the movies based on his work that you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy.
